Matthew Steele's Photo

The Judge's Comments on Matthew's photograph

For me this image has everything. Taken in the “golden hour” as the light streams through the trees and highlights the mist. It is an evocative image bringing back a memory of playing there and the natural beauty of the place that is Manning’s Pit. This tree is one of the icons of this small valley and Matthew has really captured it at its best. Technically, the photograph is excellent. Well exposed and composed.

Matthew was in fact only 13 when he took this photograph.  He has been a supporter of our campaign since it began in 2015.

Entries were displayed in Pilton Hall during Pilton Festival as part of the Manning’s Pit Environmental Exhibition, and the winners announced on
Green Man Day.

Please note: this tree is on private land, and this part of the area is not included in the land for sale. Strictly speaking, Manning's Pit is the field between Lynbro and Windsor Roads, but for the purpose of the Exhibition photos from the larger surrounding area were accepted as well..
